I love finding and combining different materials to spark creativity in kids. Are you looking for some new apple activities for your kids? Today I have a bunch of ideas that you can add to play dough to create a fun apple theme invitation to play for your kids. This is the perfect addition to your fall or autumn lessons.
If your kids can’t share supplies, don’t worry. You can use the playdough tray ideas below to create individual playdough kits for your kids.
Play Dough for Apple Activities
Of course, the “glue” that will stick everything together is playdough. You can use store-bought playdough or make your own. Need a recipe? Try my quick playdough recipe. Use red, yellow, or green play dough and generate some conversation about all the different colors of apples in the market. Many teachers love to use cinnamon-scented play dough to create the smell of an apple pie. If you are brave, you can even let kids mix cinnamon into the play dough themselves. It’s fun….but does get messy.
Additional Material Ideas for Apple Activities
A Dollar Store divided tray works perfectly for a play dough center. The fun part is trying to find some great thematic things to add to the tray. Here are a bunch of ideas for an apple theme:
- twigs and sticks
- tree cookies (I got the pictured ones at Lakeshore Learning)
- apple erasers
- beads (red, green, yellow, black )
- black beans (apple seeds)
- silk leaves (I used rose leaves…but you can also cut leaves from green foam)
- small pie plates, bread pans, custard cups, etc.
- bottle caps
- plastic worms and or bugs
- rocks/stones
- little baskets
- pipe cleaners
- Popsicle sticks
- rolling pins
- spoons
Let Kids Design, Create & Play
Providing a variety of materials creates an open activity for your kids. Kids can get some fine motor practice by stringing beads on the twigs. They may create apples or apple trees.
Kids can experiment to see how many apples they can fit in different containers. Provide a set of number cards to encourage more math and counting activities.
Kids may “bake” up some delicious apple treats. It is so much fun to watch what they decide to do with materials.
