Why Fine Motor Skills Activities for Preschoolers Are So Important
You might have noticed that preschoolers these days seem to have weaker fine motor skills compared to several years ago. This is likely due to the increased use of technology like smartphones, tablets, and video games, which keep kids indoors and don’t require much use of their little hands and small muscles.
But don’t worry; there are plenty of fun and engaging activities you can do with your young kids to help them build up their fine motor skills. Activities like playing with playdough, using scissors and hole punches, and engaging in other hands-on experiences can help improve hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and strength.
So, let’s put down the screens and get their hands working with some fun, fine motor practice activities!
Preschool Hole Punch Activity
Hole punches are a blast for preschoolers and a great way to build hand strength! Hole punch activities are also highly motivating for kids. That’s why my printable hole punch activities are so popular.
These hole punch and cut strips give kids an opportunity to use a puncher to make a little hole in on each mage on the strip. Little kids can also get some scissor practice when they snip the images apart on the line.
The fine motor bundle includes 12 sets of hole punch and cut strips with themes for the entire year. Your kids will have a blast building their small hand muscles with these printables.
Tearing Paper Activities To Improve Hand Strength For Kids
One of my favorite fine motor skills activities for preschoolers is tearing paper. Tearing paper is such a fun and simple task, and it’s another fantastic way to build hand strength and pincer grasp. The fine motor bundle includes big, bold images for each month of the year. Kids can tear different colors of paper and paste the small pieces into the images, and they LOVE the fun activity.
You can also use these printable pages as a cut-and-paste activity. Instead of tearing paper, your kids can snip strips of paper and glue them to the page.
Cut & Paste Activities
A fine motor bundle wouldn’t be complete without preschool scissor activities. These cutting and pasting activities for preschoolers are super fun for kids, and they also help boost their scissor skills and fine motor development!
By cutting out pictures and gluing them onto paper, kids get to practice using their hands and fingers in a controlled and precise way.
These cutting and pasting printables provide some good straight-line cutting practice and I know that you will love the opportunities to differentiate this activity for each child’s ability level. If they are just beginning to become comfortable with using scissors, you can cut the bottom images off for them so that kids can just snip them apart. To give your kids even more cutting practice, you can let them do all the cutting.
Fold And Cut Activities
The bundle includes additional cutting activities for preschoolers. If you’re looking for a fun way to help your preschooler practice using scissors and develop their fine motor skills, I know that you will love the printable fold and cut activities.
These printable cutting practice activities provide a great opportunity for kids to build their skills with a pair of scissors. They will have the opportunity to practice cutting along lines, and curves. The best part is when they open up their page to reveal the image.
Can you imagine the excitement on their little faces?
Again, the fine motor bundle includes 3 images for each month of the year, so you will have a variety of fold and cut activities for the whole year.
Playdough Mats
I’m sure you know that playing with playdough is a fun sensory play activity that is also a great way to build a child’s fine motor skills. Do you know what’s even better than playing with playdough? Playing with playdough on a printable playdough mat!
These thematic playdough mats are like a super-fun and educational upgrade to regular playdough time. Not only do the printable playdough activities provide a designated workspace for your little ones, but they also offer opportunities for counting and number skills.
Not only do you get lots of different playdough mats for all the months of the year, but the set includes two different sizes of playdough mats. I LOVE the small mats. They are designed to fit inside a plastic pencil case. Add a small container of playdough and the number cards, and you have a great individual playdough kit for your kids.
But, If you prefer a larger playdough mat for your kids, you can use the full-page version.
Feel free to add different materials and small objects in a playdough tray enhance the play. Who doesn’t love an activity that builds fine motor skills AND math skills?
Pre-Writing Lines Practice
You know what sets the foundation for successful writing? Pre-writing skills! Think of it like laying the foundation of a house. Your kids need to master some pre-writing skills before they start putting pencil to paper to start forming letters.
The printables in this bundle will give your kids lots of pre-writing lines practice that will help them build hand strength and strengthen their pencil grip, and develop more control with a writing instrument.
The set includes mazes for each month of the year. There are simple mazes and more complex mazes to meet the needs of your kids.
I love the connect the image pages. Kids can use their visual discrimination skills to find the matching images on the page. Then, they can draw a line from one image to the other. The challenge, is that they need to draw the line without going through other images.
….and just like all the other fine motor skills activities, the bundle includes options for every month of the year.
