Can your child remember your phone number? If he is lost, can he give your phone number to a grown up? Here is a phone number trick that will help your kiddo communicate those important digits to someone who is helping him.
Reunited with a Phone Number
A couple years ago while shopping in the kids department of a busy department store, I witnessed the staff assisting a lost child. The young boy had been separated from his parents and was trying to wander around the store to find them. While trying to encourage him to stay in one place, a staff member asked the boy if he knew his mom’s phone number. HE DID!!!! They immediately called his frantic mother. She was not in the department store, but was actually out in the mall looking for him. Within a minute of the call, the boy and his mother were together again.
As I watched the relieved mom, I began to think about my own child. My kiddo is very impulsive and could easily dart into a store finding himself separated from me. Would he be able to help someone call me? The incident in the department store made me realize how important it is for a child to know a parent’s phone number.
The Phone Number Trick
I immediately began trying to teach my phone number to my son. He had a hard time remembering all of the digits, so I had to think of a different way to help him communicate my cell phone number to others. One day, while I was putting on his shoes I thought of a solution. I took a sharpie and wrote my phone number inside his shoes. If he couldn’t remember all of the digits of my phone number he could now show someone the number that is written in his shoe. I taught him to show the number to someone if he couldn’t find me.
With some time, my kiddo did learn both my phone number and my husband’s phone number. Today, however, when he is asked to recite the numbers he sometimes gets them mixed up. Our smart phones make it so easy for us to call each other without ever typing in a phone number. We just don’t have the need to memorize phone numbers like we did in the past. So, I found myself getting the sharpie out once again and writing my number inside his shoes. We will also make a point of trying to direct dial the number so that he can remember it once again.
