Fun & Easy Crafts for The Letter X
Need some easy crafts for the letter X that actually work for preschoolers?
The letter X is one of the trickiest letters to teach! Here’s why: There are few words that START with X, and words like xylophone don’t actually make an X sound.

The real X sound (like “ks”) is much easier to hear at the END of words like box, fox, and ax. These alphabet paper-tearing crafts include BOTH beginning X words (xylophone, x-ray, x-ray fish) AND ending X words (box, fox, ax) where kids can actually hear that true X sound. You can choose which craft images to use!
Your kids will enjoy tearing colorful paper into small pieces and gluing them onto a letter X bubble letter or an image with X. This simple skill-rich craft is calming, strengthens little hands, and builds early literacy skills.
Let me show you how to use these crafts for the letter X in your classroom. You’ll love having so many options with these no-prep printables.
Why These Letter X Crafts Work So Well For Preschoolers
Paper-tearing activities are ideal for little learners. When kids tear paper into pieces, they strengthen their hand muscles…the same muscles they’ll need for using scissors. Tearing paper is Step 1 of the Cutting Confidence Ladder – the foundation that prepares little hands for cutting.

When kids tear paper and glue it onto a letter X shape or images with X sounds, they:
- Build hand muscles
- Practice bilateral coordination
- Work on eye-hand coordination
- Learn letter recognition
- Connect letters to beginning AND ending sounds
There’s a bonus, too… paper tearing is incredibly calming. Your wiggliest kids will often settle right in when they’re tearing and gluing.
Many Letter X Craft Template Options
These letter X craft templates offer lots of options, making it easy to find exactly what works for you and your kids.
Bubble Letter Page
Looking to focus on letter recognition? The letter X bubble letter page is ideal. It includes both uppercase and lowercase letters on the same page. Filling in the letter shapes with torn paper helps kids learn to recognize the shape of the letter X.

Letter X Images – Beginning Sounds
The Letter X Craft set includes 3 image options for words that BEGIN with X:
- X is for xylophone craft
- X is for x-ray craft
- X is for x-ray fish craft
Letter X Images – Ending Sounds
The Letter X Craft set also includes 3 image options for words that END with X:
- X is for box craft
- X is for fox craft
- X is for ax craft
Use these images to give your kids practice with both the beginning and ending letter x sounds.
Multiple Options for Each Image
Each image comes with several template options, giving you choices for tracing practice or extra fine motor work.
The simplest option shows just the picture and the word (like “X is for xylophone” or “X is in box”).

Do your kids need letter formation practice? There are also templates with letter tracing and even word tracing opportunities.
My favorite is the option with the hole punch border. Kids absolutely love using a hole punch, and it’s such a powerful way to build hand strength.
Different Ways to Use the Letter X Craft Pages
Paper tearing is how I use these printables most often, but these pages work in so many different ways. Change things up to keep your kids interested.
Paper Tearing (My Favorite!)
Provide scraps of construction paper or tissue paper in different colors. Show them how to tear the paper into small pieces and glue them onto the letter X images or bubble letters.

Tip: Pre-cut paper into strips to make tearing easier for younger kids. As they build strength, let them tear larger pieces on their own.
X is for Xylophone Craft Idea: Use rainbow colors for the xylophone bars—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple! Kids can tear strips of each color to create the colorful bars. This is a great opportunity to talk about music, instruments, and colors. Perfect for music themes or when learning about musical instruments.
X is for X-Ray Craft Idea: Use black paper for the x-ray background and white paper for the bones! Kids can tear pieces to create an x-ray image. This is such a cool way to talk about doctors, hospitals, and how x-rays help us see our bones. Perfect for community helpers themes or health units.
X is for X-Ray Fish Craft Idea: Use light colors or even clear-looking paper for the x-ray fish body, and white for the bones inside! This unique craft combines ocean themes with science. Kids love seeing the “skeleton” through the fish. Perfect for ocean themes or when learning about fish and sea creatures.
X is for Box Craft Idea: Use brown or tan paper for a cardboard box, or let kids choose any color! They can tear pieces to fill in the box shape. Talk about what might be inside the box—toys, presents, treasures! Perfect for teaching about shapes, containers, or imaginative play.
X is for Fox Craft Idea: Use orange or reddish-brown paper for the fox! Kids can tear pieces to fill in the fox shape. Add white paper for the tail tip and chest. You can even add googly eyes! This craft works beautifully during forest animal themes, fall units, or when learning about woodland creatures.
X is for Ax Craft Idea: Use brown paper for the ax handle and gray or silver paper for the blade! Kids can tear pieces to create the ax. This is a great opportunity to talk about tools, community helpers (firefighters, lumberjacks), and safety. Perfect for tool themes or community helper units.
Snipping and Pasting
Do your kids need to work on scissor skills? Cut paper into thin strips (about 1 inch wide). Kids make single snips to cut the strips into small pieces, then glue them onto the image. This is Step 2 of the Cutting Confidence Ladder—practicing that open-close scissor motion without worrying about cutting along a line. Great for kids just learning to use scissors.
Simple Coloring
Need something super quick? It doesn’t get any easier than using the printables as coloring pages. Kids can color the letter or image with crayons or markers. Straightforward and still builds letter recognition.

Painting
If you’re ready for a little mess, provide watercolors, tempera paint, or dot markers. Kids enjoy the sensory experience, and it strengthens their hands as they control the brush or dauber.
Rainbow Xylophone: For the xylophone craft, use different colored paint or dot markers for each bar to create a beautiful rainbow instrument!
Mixed Media
Let kids get creative by combining methods. Tear paper for the main image, then add details with crayons. Or color first, then add torn paper accents. This creative freedom makes the activity feel more special. You can add small sticks for xylophone mallets, use white chalk on black paper for x-ray bones, attach googly eyes to the fox or x-ray fish, or add real ribbon to the box like a present.
Hole Punch Page Options
If you use the craft page that has a border with circles, kids can trace the lines and then punch holes around the edge. Hole punching builds the same muscles kids need for scissor control and writing.

Kids can also use a Q-tip to dab paint on the border or add small dot stickers. Another great way to keep the activity fresh and engaging.
