There are many benefits to making crafts with young kids, and building fine motor skills is one of them. Like all of my printable fine motor crafts, I designed this cut-and-paste paper spider craft to help your kids build fine motor skills.

As they create their spider, your kids can work on their scissor skills , pencil control, and build hand-eye coordination, PLUS they’ll even build hand strength as they use a hole punch.

How to Make Paper Spider Crafts

Let me show you how to make the fun spider craft.

Craft Printing Options

I included two printing options for the spider craft activity. If you are strapped for time, use the no-prep option. All you have to do is print this single page for each child, and they have all the parts for the craft.

The second option allows you to print the parts on different colors of paper. Here, I printed the spider body and spider legs on two different colors of purple paper.

It’s fun to print the parts in a variety of colors so that kids can mix and match them to create their own unique spider creation.

You can print on black paper, but it’s just a little more challenging to see the lines of the craft pieces.

Supplies Needed for the Spider Craft

In addition to the printed spider pieces, you will need the following supplies:

Spider Craft Directions

Now that you are all set with supplies, here are the step-by-step directions for making a spider:

  • Color the spider legs and body (optional)
  • Trace the dotted lines on the spider’s head
  • Cut out the spider’s body and legs
  • Punch holes in the circles on the spider’s body
  • Snip the small lines on the bottom of the spider’s body
  • Paste the legs to the body

Variations on the Spider Craft For Preschoolers

I encourage you to have fun with this craft activity! There are many ways that you can mix things up. Here are some fun variations on the simple cut-and-paste spider craft.

Spider Leg Variations

Don’t want to cut out spider legs? No problem! They can make hairy legs with pipe cleaners. To make the legs, cut pipe cleaners in half, and kids can attach the eight of them to the spider’s body.

Did the thought of hairy spider legs make you cringe a little?…. Ha! I have a fear of spiders, too! You can also supply some popsicle sticks or craft sticks so that kids can use those as hair-less spider legs.

Ideas for Spider Eyes

You can add eyes to the spider craft. Glue googly eyes to the spider’s head…they are always cute. When your kids learn some facts about spiders, they might just want to add LOTS of googly eyes.

You can also use eyeball stickers or a dot of glitter glue or paint to make eyes.

Additional Variations

The circles printed on the spider’s body were designed for hole punching, but you can use them in other ways as well. Here are some ideas:

  • Apply small dot stickers
  • Glue sequins, beads, pom poms, gems, or other craft supplies to the dots
  • Apply dots of glue
  • Apply a dot of glue with a q-tip
  • Use a pencil eraser and stamp pad to stamp a circle in the circle.

Paper Spider Craft Differentiation Ideas

I love these printable fine motor crafts because they are easy to differentiate. For example, younger kids might need some help cutting out the spider legs, while older kids or kids with better scissor skills will be able to cut them out themselves.
