Christmas Tree Art Activities for Preschoolers
I love taking a simple idea and seeing how many creative twists we can come up with! You’ll find ideas for kids of all ages.
Christmas Tree Name Coloring Sheets
I recently designed some Christmas name coloring pages. One of the pages has simple triangular trees on it. These were the inspiration for all of my Christmas tree art projects.
Using green construction paper triangles, I experimented with a variety of art techniques to turn them into a festive winter wonderland, and I’ll show you all the ideas for preschool-friendly Christmas art projects I came up with.
Use these playful holiday art projects to make cute homemade Christmas cards, gift tags, and Christmas decorations for your home or classroom.
Cut Paper Christmas Tree Project
To begin, I cut different sizes of triangles out of different shades of green paper. Then, I cut thin strips of white paper, green construction paper, and green scrapbook paper.

Kids can cut the strips of paper and paste them onto the triangle to make a fun collage. They can use long strips so that they look like fun garland, or they can cut them up into little pieces to make a textured tree.
This is a great way to give younger kids an opportunity to build the muscles in their little hands and work on their cutting skills. Older children will have fun getting creative with the materials.

Feel free to mix it up with different colors of paper. You can also encourage kids to use hole punches to add some interest to the strips of paper.
Hole Punch Christmas Art Project
Next, I began playing with plain strips of paper and a hole punch. Hole punching activities are a fun way to build hand strength. This is a great project for a star-shaped hole punch.
Kids can use a glue stick to paste hole-punch strips of paper to their tree, they can cut the strips apart, or they can just punch holes into the trees.

I love that these ideas produce fairly no-mess Christmas art for kids. There is no glitter or paint involved.
Fine Motor Christmas Painting Project
I tried some fine motor painting techniques and loved the outcome. To make the tree on the left, we taped the tip of the tree to an easel. Then, we applied drips of thin paint with an eyedropper. It was fun to watch the drops of paint drip down the length of the tree.
We pasted squares of bleeding tissue paper to the tree on the right. Then, we used a spray bottle to apply water to the tissue and watched the colors bleed onto the Christmas tree.

Painted Christmas Tree Projects
Get out the white paint, and let me show you a bunch of different techniques you can use this winter and Christmas season. We had fun playing with different ways to apply paint.
Use a small piece of garland as a festive way to create a unique texture. Use a pencil eraser to add dots of white paint to the tree.

You can make your own paintbrushes for simple Christmas process art activities. Just use a dab of hot glue to adhere materials to a small block of wood. We experimented with Christmas bows, buttons, rubber bands, and snowflake sequins.

You can see the finished product below. Get creative and think about additional things you can use to create a DIY paintbrush. Try an evergreen branch, pom poms, strings, pine cones, Christmas ornaments, etc.
You can also experiment with different types of paint. Try puffy paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, or other colors of paint.

Christmas Tree Collage Art Project
In addition to the paper collages above, kids can paste different materials to their art activity. We used fake snow, cotton balls (we pulled them apart), and torn tissue paper.

Dig through your craft supplies. I’m sure you’ll find lots of fun things to use for fun Christmas collages. Use sequins, ribbons, pom poms, popsicle sticks, etc. to create a beautiful holiday art project.

Don’t forget about dot stickers… they are great for building fine motor skills and the pincer grasp. I love the background of this project! We used white tissue confetti.

I hope this gave you some ideas for Christmas art projects for you and your kids.
